2020 Online Festival

The 2020 virtual festival was an amazing online experience and we thank you for your participation!

Hanan Arts is extremely proud of the 2020 Havana Habibi Online Festival project. Against all odds and under the hardest conditions, we created something beautiful and meaningful in equal parts, gathering a remarkable cast of international artists to collaborate on an innovative and powerful new project at a time when grief, loss and uncertainty can seem paralyzing for artists and audiences alike. The 2020 Havana Habibi Festival Online created a healing bridge through dance and music centered on the experiences of women in the diaspora showing how music and dance help to connect, dismantle, and re-imagine borders.

We welcomed over 8000 views of the featured documentaries during the 2020 Havana Habibi Online Festival, which included Havana Habibi (2016), Diasporas (2018), and Ya Habibi, The Story of a Song (2020). The story of “Ya Habibi Ta‘ala," is a perfect metaphor of the permeability of culture and identity and the often invisible processes that blur the borders and differences that would otherwise distinguish us, implicating us instead in each other's histories, even against historical odds.

Thank you, also, to the more than 600 virtual attendees of our dance workshops during the 2020 Havana Habibi Online Festival. The festival gave us an opportunity to come together in ways we couldn't have before from across different reaches of the globe.

A special thank you to our beloved teachers: Amar Gamal who put together the "Raks Sharqi Afro-Flow" workshop (learn more about Amar on her website HERE) and École Anadanse for her "Raks Sharqi and female Orishas: A rhythmic journey towards the Divine Feminine" workshop (follow her on Instagram at @anadanseorientale).

We couldn't have imagined a better turn out! With 13 countries participating and 600 virtual participants in our online dance workshops, you showed us that dance, culture, and learning are just as important now as ever.

We're already looking forward to 2021!

We love your support!
